Johan Limonta learned to love baseball in Cuba, where he was born. As a teen he felt that if he was to continue to grow as a player, he needed to move to the United States. This was easier said than done, as Cuba’s borders were firmly closed. Limonta was eighteen years old when he got a moment of opportunity to board a boat with 35 other Cuban immigrants, including four other baseball players. The boat was only meant to hold ten people. The journey was only meant to last eight hours. But a massive storm overtook then on the way, and a boat ride that should have taken only eight hours stretched out to two whole days. “I really thought I was going to die. I didn’t see how we could make it to the United States with such a little boat and the large waves and winds,” Limonta said. Miraculously, with no food or water on board, the boat made it safely to an island 70 miles off the coast of Florida, where the passengers were rescued by the US Coast Guard. That was the beginning of Limonta’s long-awaited US baseball career.
The first team to recruit Limonta in the US was Miami-Dade College. His pro baseball career began in 2006 with the Seattle Mariners– Limonta was 20th draft pick out of college. He reached AAA league while playing with the Mariners. In 2013, he played with the San Diego Padres AA affiliate in San Antonio to win the League Championship. Most recently he celebrated a win at the 2016 Atlantic League Championship with the Sugarland Skeeters. Limonta has proven himself as an infielder and hitter, with a career .294 average.
Limonta now serves as Assistant Coach to his former team, Sugarland Skeeters.
He also provides private, professional coaching for essential baseball skills at Prime Time Baseball in Katy, Texas.
